Alberobello does not need much introduction as it is widely known as the home of the Trullo, a type of cylindrical construction in dry rock with a conical roof. Often constructed in series of trulli joined together with interconnecting rooms, the history of the trullo has more myth than factual history attached to it.
The version that we subscribe to is that the trullo was introduced by peasants trying to avoid the heavy taxes imposted by administrations in 1 and 2 BC. The trulli are constructed with a keystone over the front door, the removal of which causes the whole structure to collapse. Our hopefully reliable source advised that the heavily taxing regime of the day did not levy taxes on temporary structures and therefore the trullo became an early instrument of tax avoidance. Alberobello has the highest concentration of Trulli, most of which have been refurbished to their original state externally and converted into comfortable abodes internally.
Rent a holiday villa or Trullo in Alberobella or nearby in one of the villages in Val d'Itria where you can visit the beaches or countryside and enjoy the hospitality of the Apulia region. Our vacation accommodation in this region includes villas, trulli, apartments, masserie (bed and breakfast) and special hotels. For the latter accommodation, you may have to visit our sister site at www.vacanzeinvilla.com.
