Apulia, Val d'Itria, Ostuni

The majestic whitewashed town of Ostuni is situated on three hills and enjoys an excellent panorama over the Adriatic sea and the surrounding fields of ancient olive trees. To anyone travelling on the road that runs along the stretch of the Adriatic Coast north of Brindisi, Ostuni appears like some kind of white, bright mirage on the horizon. This is the first sight of a town to be discovered and to wonder at - a lively town which winds its way around cobbled laneways opening onto colourful piazzas with outdoor cafes, restaurants and market squares.
Ostuni is renowned worldwide for being 'the white town'. Built like many other Apulian hilltop towns, with streets circling around themselves, lined with bright houses and paved with white stone, Ostuni has a unique charm and a very rich history. From the main square, that is a true architectural mosaic of styles, a steep path climbs up to the old town centre, one of the most fascinating to be admired anywhere in Apulia. Fortified towers, a meander of lanes, steps and stairs, arches, doorways and balconies adorned with bright red geraniums create a magical atmosphere.
