Perched on a crest overlooking two verdant valleys, Macerata is a city of unique historical and artistic interest. Two jewels of Romanesque art are set in the green rolling hills surrounding Macerata. The magnificent Chiaravalle di Fiastra Abbey, founded in the 12th century, is the only example of Cistercian architecture in the area. The Santa Maria a Pie’ di Chienti Abbey, erected in the 9th century, is one of the most ancient buildings in the entire region. A visit to the abbeys provides tourists with a unique opportunity to further appreciate the history, art and nature of this province.
Around the Macerata area are rich rolling hills with patchworks of agriculture - olives, vineyards, colourful spring poppies, sunflowers, wheat, maize and wonderful old estates and antique hamlets waiting to be discovered. Meanwhile in the valleys, the area has a vibrant shoe sector and factory shops are in hot competition with the outlet stores that have grown in recent years.
