Liguria, Cinque Terra, Vernazza

The second of the Cinque Terra towns from the northern end (between Monterosso and Corniglia), Vernazza is probably recognised as the prettiest of the 5 villages. The small fishing port is protected by a tallish headland and has the benefit of a small but lovely sandy beach, overlooked by the main piazza, and the colourful buildings cascading down the hills surrounding it.
The gently sloping main thoroughfare (pedestrian only) is lovely and wide leading down the 400 or so metres from the railway station past delicious trattorias, cafe's and colourful local shops. A series of lanes lead off this street to the various quarters of the village or walking paths to the other villages.
