Lying approximately 47km northwest of Florence on the main highway connecting Florence with Lucca and the seaside, Montecatini is well known for its hot springs that have been popular since the 14th century. The elegant town with its thermal facilities lies the foot of a quaint medieval hilltop village known as Montecatini Alto. Both centres are connected by cable railway and are very popular destinations.
The hot springs of Montecatini have been famous since the 14th century but reached international fame at the turn of last century. From Montecatini you can easily reach Monsummano Terme with its spectacular natural caves, Pescia with its renowned flower market, the 18th century Villa Garzoni surrounded by a marvellous garden in Italian style, and the monumental complex dedicated to Pinocchio. In addition the area surrounding Montecatini holds many itineraries including medieval castles and villages which dot the quiet green peacefulness of Val di Nievole.
