Electricity and adapters for rental villas

Electricity

The standard electrical current in Italy is 220 volts and 50 Hz (cycles). Due to the age of many properties and the prevailing restrictions on electricity use, most rental villas operate on a maximum consumption of 3 or 5kw after which the main supply will automatically cut out. Practically, this means that you cannot use more than one or two major appliance at a time ie toaster, washing machine, dishwasher, electric kettle, oven. If the power goes out, you will need to reset (turn on) the main switch which will be located either at the meter or in a wall box with glass cover within the dwelling. The house book or local manager will explain the location of these switches.

Adapter Plugs

Electrical plugs differ according to the age and style of dwelling, some with two large (or small) pins, and some with three. German (round) plugs are common here and most electrical appliances will have adapters fitted to make them fit the local fittings.

Multi adapters are available to suite most options, and local adapters are readily available which can be combined for all situations. In some areas, the local infrastructure is stretched during the tourist season causing a drop in voltage or amperes (strength). Travellers from the US will need a voltage converter for most appliances brought over.

Telephone plugs are often of the RJ5 model, and adapters can be purchased in any appliance shop where the plug is of a three pin type
